Noun Genders

In Spanish, all nouns have articles before the noun that match their gender.  The female articles are “la, las, una, unas” and male articles are “el, los, un, unos”.  There are rules to determine if a noun is male or female; masculine nouns usually end in “o” or “ma”, and are used for mixed gender groups.  Feminine nouns, on the other hand, usually end in “a”, “cion”, or ”sion”.  Although there are general guidelines, there are exceptions to the rules, which will need to be memorized with the help of a tutor NYC.

Verb Conjugation

One of the first things you’ll learn in Spanish is how to conjugate verbs in present tense.  Spanish verbs end in –ar, -er, or –ir; these endings will be removed and then conjugated depending on the subject of the sentence.  For example, to talk is “hablar”, but to say I talk it is “yo hablo”, you talk is “tu hablas”, we talk is “nosotros hablamos”, and they talk is “ellos hablan”.  After you master present tense, a private tutor in NYC will teach you past tense, future tense, and subjuntivo.

Adjectives After Nouns

Unlike English, the adjective goes after the noun in Spanish.  This is something that English speakers often struggle with, but will feel for comfortable with after time and practice.

Pluralization

Gender, nouns, and adjectives must agree in number, whether they are singular or plural.  You cannot pair a singular adjective with a plural noun.  For example, to say the black dog, you would say “el perro negro”, but to say the black dogs, you would say “los perros negros”.

Sentence Structure

A sentence in Spanish begins with the subject, followed by the verb, and then finished with the rest of the information, such as where and why.
