Children follow by example to a much further extent that most parents would like to admit, even if most of them know it’s true. That’s a lot of responsibility for a parent, seeing as how it’s the parents who spend the most time with their child in the earliest stages of life. You don’t have to be a saint to be a good parent. What do you do have to do is simply to care about your child’s wellbeing. And more importantly, you should be willing to adapt when you notice that one parenting method is or isn’t working as you’d hoped.

What are the greatest challenges for parents? Well, communicating the value and importance of education comes to mind. And pop culture portraying the lazy kid as the cool one certainly doesn’t help. Despite whatever exterior influences by be getting in the way of your child’s development, at the end of the day, you are the most important influence in his or her life. So if you want your child to actually enjoy learning new things, and genuinely take school seriously, here’s what you need to do.

Talk about what you find interesting

As mentioned, a good parent leads by example. If you show that learning new things is actually fun, that will translate into a similar mentality for your child.  Tell your child about the things that you find stimulating and make sure your child notices how excited you are about it. What books are you reading? What stories are in the news? Talk about what you personally have learned about lately. Moreover, it helps a lot if you get excited when your child shows interest as well. The idea is to frame the learning experience in a positive manner, preferably earlier in life, when you still are the still main source of influence for your child.

Have your own extracurricular activities

Hobbies are good for mental health. A long day’s work deserves a reward. Why not make that reward be something that leads to self improvement? And by the way, those good habits will have a tremendously positive effect on your child. It will make your child actually want to join a sport’s team or join a club at school. Happiness and positivity are contagious. If you show your child that you’re happy, you will soon see that positive attitude popping up in your son or daughter.

Give space for your child to discover his or her own pleasures

If your child begins to see the learning process simply an obligation that you’ve imposed upon him or her, that will have a negative effect in the long term. School is tiresome enough as it is. Your child, just like you, needs space and time pursue his or her own interests. You can make things available for your child to further investigate if he or she finds it stimulating. But it’s usually best to allow him or her to discover it at his or her own pace. Only push if he or she really finds it interesting.
